The Grumman TBF-1 Avenger had a rough start at the Battle of Midway, where five out of six were shot down. But it became the main torpedo bomber for the Navy in World War II. It had many uses including glide bombing, reconnaissance, and light transport. They made 9,836 Avengers in total, with General Motors Eastern Aircraft Division making 7,546 TBMs. The TBF-1 was Grumman's answer to the outdated TBD Devastator, and they made improvements based on its performance in combat. By the end of the war, the Avenger had proven to be versatile and able to do a variety of missions beyond just torpedo-bombing. In the photo here, you can see a TBM-3E Avenger flying in a show at the Wings Over Houston event in 2016 at Ellington Field, Texas.
